Diverticulitis
Inflammation or infection of small pouches (diverticula) in the bowel, leading to pain, fever, and digestive issues. It affects about 1 in 10 people aged 45-65, and 1 in 3 people over 65 in the UK.
Irritable bowel disease (IBD)
A broad term covering chronic conditions like Crohn’s and ulcerative colitis, marked by inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS)
Functional bowel disorder causing abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits.
Perforated bowel
A medical emergency where a hole forms in the bowel wall, causing severe abdominal pain and infection. This condition is rare but can occur as a complication of other bowel issues.
Twisted bowel (volvulus)
A condition where the bowel twists around itself, causing blockage and severe pain. This is rare but more common in older adults, particularly those with chronic constipation.
Ulcerative colitis
