Deep vein thrombosis Travel Insurance

Surprisingly deep vein thromboses are very common, however if you have had a DVT in the past, it is imperative to make sure that you have reliable insurance cover for your holiday, especially if you are going on a long haul journey, just in case!

Why Free Spirit travel insurance is the right choice!

Free Spirit was the first scheme of its type dedicated to those being declined cover elsewhere due to their health. Our policy not only offers great medical benefits but also cancellation cover before you go and emergency medical expenses whilst you are away.

Should the unexpected happen and you have another DVT while on holiday, Free Spirit can provide cover for your medical costs including medical repatriation if medically necessary. We will also cover your personal possessions, if your bags are delayed or if you lose your travel documents. See what’s covered, we do all of this at an affordable price without comprising the insurance cover.

Most people don’t think about covering their travelling companions on the same policy, especially if they don’t have any pre-existing medical conditions. However if you include them on the same Free Spirit policy, you will ensure the whole party is covered in the event you had to cancel your holiday due to a DVT or an associated medical conditions prior to you travelling.

What if I don’t buy medical travel insurance for DVT?

No one wants to experience a medical emergency while abroad, however, should the unexpected happen and you require emergency medical treatment, if you have failed to ensure your DVT or other medical conditions, this could leave you open to paying out for very expensive medical treatment and hospital accommodation costs, which could lead into thousands of pounds.

So why not arrange your insurance as soon you book your holiday, you will be immediately protected should you need to cancel your trip (terms and conditions apply of course!)

It is also very important to seek medical advice before travelling and obtain confirmation from your GP or hospital consultant that you are fit to travel prior to your trip departure. Flying with a DVT can cause a number of risks and it is important that your doctor or consultant is happy with your travel plans. Flying at high altitude can cause poor blood circulation however this can be reduced by wearing appropriate clothing.

Flight stockings / socks

Flight stockings or socks are recommended for people suffering with DVT as they apply sufficient pressure to the legs to keep the blood circulating and reducing the risk of swelling, otherwise known as an oedema. They should be worn for the entire flight and for flights of at least 4 hours or more.

Tips while you’re travelling with deep vein thrombosis

If you are planning a long-distance trip ensure that you:

  • wear loose comfortable clothes
  • store luggage overhead so you have room to stretch out your legs
  • remember to do your anti-DVT exercises
  • walk around whenever you can
  • drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol

Getting a quote for your travel insurance with DVT cover

Some insurance providers don’t cover deep vein thrombosis due to the potential risks of increased claims arising from this condition.

However at Free Spirit we have a wide knowledge of this medical condition and the additional associated medical conditions caused by it, such as cancer, stroke, heart disease, obesity and pregnancy. As part of the online quote process we will ask you some questions about your DVT so that you get the cover you need for your medical condition(s):

  • Did you also have any clots in your lungs?
  • Are you still taking anticoagulant (blood-thinning) medication for this condition?
  • How many times have you had a thrombosis (clot)?
  • Do you have a blood disorder which makes your blood more likely to clot?
